Naylor was originally slated to bat fourth as the designated hitter against Mets left-hander Sean Manaea, but he was replaced in the lineup by Mitch Garver, who will DH and bat sixth.
Seattle’s lineup already had a bit of a different look for its contest at Citi Field.
For just the third time since the All-Star break, veteran Donovan Solano is getting a start. Solano is playing first base and batting seventh.
Solano has appeared in just seven games (three starts) since the break and two games since July 25. However, he is coming off a two-hit performance in his most recent start Aug. 8 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
There were a couple other notable wrinkles to Seattle’s lineup against Manaea.
Right fielder Dominic Canzone is getting a chance to bat higher in the order against left-hander than usual in the five hole, which is one spot from where he was before Naylor was pulled. The left-handed-hitting Canzone is batting .250 off southpaws.
Rookie Cole Young is also in the lineup at second base and batting ninth. Young, a left-handed hitter, did not start the past five matchups against a left-handed starter, with the M’s turning to veteran Jorge Polanco instead. Young is hitting .214 against left-handers.
Friday’s lineup will look to back starter Luis Castillo, who takes the mound holding an 8-6 record and 3.19 ERA in 24 starts this season.
The Mariners open a three-game series at the New York Mets on Friday at 4:10 p.m. Radio coverage begins with the pregame show at 3 p.m. on 770 KTTH and the Seattle Sports app.
