Hot Stove Show podcast: Zduriencik talks options for right field
The podcast and complete recap of the Hot Stove Show, including some very interesting comments from Jack Zduriencik on what could be next for the Mariners.
If you missed the “Hot Stove League” show Friday night, fear not, there is a podcast. Although the show was broadcast a day before news broke that Melky Cabrera was signing with the White Sox, general manager Jack Zduriencik gave a good amount of insight into what he he was trying to do to fill the Mariners’ need in the outfield.
Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik stopped by the Mariners Team Store in Bellevue on Friday night for a 25-minute interview on the first hour of the show. Zduriencik had some interesting things to say about what could be next for the Mariners after returning from the Winter Meetings.
“We have dialogue going now,” he told Rick Rizzs, Mike Blowers and me. “I think we have some pretty interesting discussions going. It may not be the splash that everyone is hoping for or waiting for, but I do think it will be pieces that help the club. We could put a couple together, we could do something via trade, we could do maybe one or two pieces on the free-agent market that kind of give you a little different flavor.”
While Zduriencik is willing to make a deal, it sounds less likely that he will deal a starting pitcher to fill the need in the outfield. And while he said he “might have to get a little bit creative” in coming up with an outfielder, he also said that he was confident they would get something done. Then he added the kicker: “I think we will probably do more than one thing.”
The show also featured interviews I had with Kyle Seager and Nelson Cruz at their recent press conferences, and in the second hour of the show we had an interesting conversation with MLB.com columnist Tracy Ringolsby, who gives a great account of Hall of Fame and Veterans Committee voting as well as the nominating process.
Marketing director Greg Greene also joins us to talk about Fanfest, preparing for the new commercials, and his department’s involvement in trying to bring free agents to Seattle.
The next “Hot Stove League” show will be Jan. 6.
