‘Oh Cal-nada!’ Cal Raleigh burns Blue Jays again with ALCS HR

Cal Raleigh just continues to torment the Toronto Blue Jays in the Rogers Centre.

It’s on – Mariners stun Blue Jays 3-1 in ALCS Game 1

The All-Star catcher helped spark the Seattle Mariners’ 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday night, blasting a game-tying 420-foot solo home run in the sixth inning to kickstart the scoring for the M’s.

It was the second homer of the postseason for Raleigh, who is coming off a record-setting 60-homer regular season. And it was Raleigh’s ninth homer in 53 career at-bats at the Rogers Centre, including both the regular season and playoffs. Raleigh’s other postseason homer north of the border came in Game 1 of the 2022 AL wild card round.

The shot was accompanied by a fitting call on the Mariners Radio Network broadcast on Seattle Sports by Gary Hill Jr., who exclaimed “Oh Cal-nada!” after it reached the seats.

Raleigh entered the night with the highest OPS (1.195) and the highest slugging percentage (.820) in Rogers Centre history among players with at least 50 plate appearances in the stadium.

It was also Raleigh’s fourth homer in 17 career at-bats against two-time All-Star right-hander Kevin Gausman.

Gausman had retired 16 straight batters before leaving a 2-2 splitter over the lower part of the strike zone against Raleigh in the sixth. Batting left-handed, Raleigh clubbed it into the right-field seats for a no-doubt solo blast that broke the ice for Seattle.

Julio Rodríguez then followed with a two-out walk, which prompted Toronto to go to its bullpen. Rodríguez then advanced to second on a wild pitch from reliever Brendon Little and scored on an RBI single by Jorge Polanco to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead.
