After a 14 year NFL quarterbacking career, former UW Husky Damon Huard knows what it takes to make it in pro football. And after watching Russell Wilson nearly lead Seattle to victory Sunday against Arizona, Huard has nothing but praise for the rookie QB.
“I think he has future quarterback written all over him. I love everything about him other than he’s 5-foot-10,” Huard tells Brock and Salk.
Huard says he’s impressed with Wilson’s composure, especially in the face of a fierce Arizona pass rush that saw him scrambling much of the game.
“I thought for a rookie quarterback in that atmosphere in his first start he was exceptional.”
Huard says many rookies in the same situation would panic and throw at least a bunch of interceptions. Wilson was 18/34 for 153 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
“They brought some pressure, they brought some heat, he had some guys in his face and took some big hits. But he gave the team a chance to win in the fourth quarter and guys had to make some plays for him and they didn’t.”
Huard says the biggest thing to watch for is a loss of confidence if Wilson struggles against Dallas or in other upcoming games.
But Huard says so far, Wilson has shown a calmness and maturity well beyond his years.
“I just think from everything I’ve seen from this kid he’s not going to lose that confidence, and you see the interviews and the way he handles himself, his leadership skills in the huddle, all those little things. I think he passed the test week one and you only get better.”
