The Seahawks are reportedly adding a veteran running back to the mix for 2020, but it’s not the one many thought it would be.

After reports that Seattle had given an offer to former Falcons running back Devonta Freeman for a max of $4 million that he refused as he wanted more money, the other name that came up was Carlos Hyde. Hyde, 29, was apparently in talks with the Seahawks on a potential deal as well.

Well, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, it is indeed Hyde who will be a Seahawk for the 2020 season.

In a later tweet, Pelissero said Hyde is signing a one-year deal, and according to Rapoport, Hyde can earn up to $4 million in 2020.

Adding a running back was seen as somewhat necessary for the Seahawks as 2018 first-round pick Rashaad Penny tore his ACL in Week 14 and is working his way back. It’s thought that the young back will start the season on the physically unable to perform list.

With Penny hurt, that left starter Chris Carson, who ran for 1,000 yards the last two years but also suffered a season-ending injury late in the season, as well as 2019 rookie Travis Homer and 2020 fourth-round pick DeeJay Dallas as the only running backs on Seattle’s roster.

While Carson will likely be the team’s go-to back for the third season in a row, Hyde is more than capable of making an impact next year.

Who is Carlos Hyde?

Hyde started his career in the NFC West in 2014, playing for the San Francisco 49ers from 2014 to 2017, so there’s is some level of familiarity between Hyde and the Seahawks already.

After 2017, Hyde signed a three-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, but he lasted just six games for Cleveland in 2018 before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jacksonville cut Hyde after the 2018 season ended and he signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was traded to the Houston Texans shortly before the 2019 season began. While with the Texans, Hyde had arguably his best NFL season, rushing for over 1,000 yards for the first time (1,070) and scoring eight total touchdowns. It was the third time Hyde surpassed 900 rushing yards in a single season during his NFL career.

Throughout his six-year career, Hyde has totaled 4,370 rushing yards and 32 rushing touchdowns. He also has 709 career receiving yards and caught three touchdown passes, all in 2016.

Hyde is 6-0 and weighs around 230 pounds, and is known as a powerful rusher, which the Seahawks and head coach Pete Carroll often look for in their running backs. He has a career 4.1 yards per carry, and averaged 4.4 yards per carry last season with Houston.
