The Seahawks added another weapon in the passing game for quarterback Russell Wilson with the final pick of the sixth round, selecting Florida receiver Freddie Swain with the last pick of the sixth round.

The Breakdown: A look at all 7 Seahawks 2020 NFL Draft picks

The lead up to the draft was full of discussion on the receiving group, which was considered one of the deepest receiving groups in the history of the NFL Draft. Seattle waited until their seventh pick, which was initially their last, to ultimately take one.

Swain is 6-feet tall, weighs just under 200 pounds and also ran an unofficial 4.46-second 40-yard dash. During his four years at Florida, Swain had 68 catches for 996 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was also used as a punt returner and had a return touchdown his junior season. Swain’s best year at Florida was 2019, when he caught 38 passes for 517 yards and seven touchdowns.

Swain joins a solid receiving room in Seattle led by Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. The Seahawks also signed Philip Dorsett in free agency and have David Moore and John Ursua returning.

“This is a guy who you look at his size and his speed, it jumps off the page in terms of being a 4.4 player,” Jake Heaps said. “That’s something they really value here in Seattle. Almost every receiver that they have take, if you don’t run a 4.4, you’re not getting picked.”

Heaps said that during Swain’s time with the Gators, he played predominately in the slot. Metcalf typically lines up outside, and Lockett can play both outside and inside.

“When I watch him, he’s a player who has the ability to make people miss and I think that’s something exciting that you can look at and say he is a guy (where) run after catch is a serious threat,'” Heaps said.

Paul Gallant, who used to live in Florida and follows the Gators, said Swain’s production in college may not jump out as Florida has had inconsistent quarterback play during his four years.

“I would say Freddie Swain, as far as situations to succeed just based off the quarterbacks that he was working with, considering the talent that they bring in to their program year in and year out, it has been rough over the last few years,” he said. “How much of a real seasoning did Freddie Swain get at Florida? Probably not much largely because of his quarterbacks.”

Now Swain will have the opportunity to compete with Dorsett, Moore and Ursua for playing time and the chance to catch passes from Wilson, one of the best quarterbacks in the entire NFL.
