Seahawks injuries: Brown progressing, Diggs and Clowney good for Sunday

The Seahawks have been one of the unluckiest teams in the NFL when it comes to injuries, losing a number of starters and key contributors for significant lengths of time or, in some cases, for the rest of the season.

O’Neil: Seahawks and Packers have history, but they’ve reversed roles

The good news is that a few players who have missed action in recent weeks or had concerns regarding their availability for Sunday’s divisional game against the Green Bay Packers look like they’ll be in uniform when the game starts.

Two of those players are safety Quandre Diggs and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who both missed regular season action late in the year due to injury and played Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Clowney missed three games with a core injury and has not practiced much in order to limit the injury, which will likely require surgery when the season is over.

“We’re going one day at a time,” Carroll said of how the team is using  Clowney at practice. “But not today … (He feels) about the same as last week. Which is a good sign because he (played on Sunday).”

Diggs injured his ankle in Week 15 against the Carolina Panthers and missed Week 16 and Week 17 before returning against the Eagles. Carroll said he made it through the game in good shape.

“I just talked to him today,” Carroll said. “He was a little bit sore yesterday. He’s fine. He’s ready to go.

The Seahawks were without the left side of their starting offensive line in Philadelphia as left tackle Duane Brown and left guard Mike Iupati were inactive.  Brown had knee surgery before Week 17 and Iupati has battled a neck injury during the last half of the season.

With Iupati, his status for the time being is unclear.

“Nothing much on Mike yet,” Carroll said. “We’re waiting for a second opinion on something.”

Brown’s been steadily recovering from his surgery and Carroll had good news regarding the veteran’s rehab.

“Duane did some work yesterday and is doing work again today,” Carroll said. “He won’t practice today but it’s an encouraging sign about him making his return, so we’ll see what happens. We won’t know until late (in the week).”

George Fant started at left tackle for Brown and Jamarco Jones started at guard for Iupati. Expect the same if the two veterans are again inactive. Both held their own, but the line had a hard time creating lanes for the Seahawks’ running backs, who had just 19 rushing yards on 17 carries. Brown and Iupati’s returns could be a big boost for the rushing attack.

Defensive end Ziggy Ansah left the Eagles game with a stinger, but it sounds like he will be ready to play the Packers.

“He feels better than the trainers thought he would be after the episode he had in the game, so he’s planning on working his way back into playing. We’ll see how it goes during the week.”

The passing game may get a boost as well, as wide receiver Malik Turner, who missed Week 16 and Week 17 with a concussion, is trending upward.

“He’s going to practice today and we’ll see how he responds to the practice,” Carroll said.

Linebacker Mychal Kendricks tore his ACL in Week 17 but was not placed on injured reserve until Wednesday. Taking his place on the 53-man roster is offensive lineman Chad Wheeler, who was promoted from Seattle’s practice squad.
