Update, Nov. 24: Seahawks QB Russell Wilson set the NFL record with his eighth consecutive winning season as a quarterback to begin an NFL career with Seattle’s 17-9 win over the Eagles. Read about it here. The original story is below.

Since entering the NFL in 2012, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has been among the best not only in major passing statistics, but also in winning football games.

From his rookie season of 2012 through Week 11 of the 2019 season, Wilson has helped guide the Seahawks to an 83-38-1 record. He also quarterbacked the only Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2013, and owns nearly every major franchise passing record.

Wilson is also the winningest quarterback in Seahawks history, and a win on Sunday would put Wilson in a league of his own in NFL history.

The Seahawks are 8-2 heading into Week 12, which guarantees they will finish this season with at least a .500 record. So as long as the Seahawks win on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles or in any of the other six games remaining on their schedule, Wilson would be the first quarterback in the 100-year history of the NFL to have a winning record in each of his first eight seasons.

“I didn’t know that was coming,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll told 97.3 KIRO FM’s Dori Monson on the weekly Pete Carroll Show when Monson pointed out that possibility. “That’s a great marker. He’s had a career already of first where he’s just done things so well coming out of the chutes and all that to put up numbers and consistency and all that kind of stuff.”

Carroll attributes a lot of Wilson’s success to his personality.

“I think it’s just another statement about his makeup and the character and the competitor he is,” he said of his star quarterback. “He’s so consistently ‘Russ’ and he just continues to find ways to be that marvelous competitor that he is and it’s just paved its way to this kind of record opportunity and he’ll get that one before long, so that’s really cool that that’s happening.”

Wilson is considered to be one of two leaders in the 2019 MVP discussion along with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Wilson leads the league in passing touchdowns with 23 and is playing arguably the best football of his eight-year career, but Jackson has overtaken Wilson in the betting odds for the award.

Monson thinks Wilson didn’t get the respect he deserved early in his career because he was a mobile quarterback rather than a prototypical pocket passer. Now, Jackson, who is on pace to be just the second quarterback in NFL history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season, is getting a lot of credit for being a mobile quarterback. Carroll said criticism of Wilson’s play led his doubters to double-down on their critiques.

“Don’t you think that happened because people doubted Russ’ ability?” Carroll said. “And they didn’t think he could make it so they all made that statement that he’ll be a flash in the pan or whatever, so they looked for ways to justify the fact that they were wrong and he just outlasted them and proved that he was way more than that, and he proved all the doubters that he is the real deal.

“I think that that’s kind of common Human Nature a little bit to cover for yourself, but he’s leaving no doubt now.”

Wilson also has six games to break Tom Brady’s record for most wins by a quarterback in their first eight seasons. Brady won 86 over his first eight years in the NFL.
