Not even a year after the Mariners traded young pitcher Andrew Moore to the Tampa Bay Rays, the right-hander out of Oregon State is back with the franchise.

The Mariners claimed Moore off of waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Friday, returning one of Seattle’s recent top prospects to their minor league system. The soon-to-be 25-year-old Moore (his birthday is June 2) will report to Double-A Arkansas, while Triple-A reliever Nick Rumbelow has been designated for assignment to make room for Moore on the Mariners’ 40-man roster.

Drafted in the second round by Seattle in the 2015 MLB Draft – the Mariners’ last draft under previous general manager Jack Zduriencik – the Eugene, Ore., native reached the majors with the M’s in July 2017 at the age of 23, making nine starts and 11 total appearances. While he got off to a good start in the big leagues, pitching quality starts in each of his first three outings, making it through seven innings in his debut and eight innings in his next turn, he mostly struggled the rest of the season other than back-to-back quality starts to begin September of that season.

Moore was traded to the Rays on May 25, 2018 along with fellow pitching prospect Tommy Romero for All-Star reliever Alex Colomé and veteran outfielder Denard Span, but he has not pitched in the MLB since. He was designated for assignment late last month and claimed by the Giants on May 5, who then designated him for assignment themselves just six days later.

Moore has some work to do before challenging to return to the majors. Heralded for a veteran-like pitching style with good command and an ability to pitch to contact while coming up through the Mariners’ system, he has had more trouble with walks than ever over the past two seasons. This season he has a combined 14.21 ERA, 2.37 WHIP and 5.2 walks per nine innings in six games (five starts) between Double-A and Triple-A.

Rumbelow, 27, appeared in three games with the Mariners early this year, giving up four runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched with one save. At Triple-A Tacoma, he is 3-1 with a 9.19 ERA with 11 strikeouts and 10 walks in 13 relief appearances (15 2/3 innings). He joined the Mariners from the Yankees via trade after the 2017 season and had a 6.11 ERA in 13 appearances with Seattle in 2018.
