The Mariners placed veteran starter Hisashi Iwakuma on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday for inflammation in his right shoulder. The move is retroactive to May 7.

The team called up right-hander Sam Gaviglio as a replacement, and the 26-year-old will be in uniform Wednesday against the Phillies.

Iwakuma took a batted ball off his knee in his last start but that is apparently not the issue. 710 ESPN Seattle’s Shannon Drayer reports that Kuma is heading home for an MRI on shoulder but does not think it is serious. The 36-year-old is 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA in six starts with the Mariners this season. He posted back-to-back quality starts to begin the season but has since gone 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA over his last four starts.

Seattle is already missing starters Drew Smyly, Felix Hernandez and James Paxton from rotation. Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said Monday that Hernandez is ahead of schedule and is hopeful both he and Paxton will return for the team’s next homestand.

Gaviglio is 2-3 with a 3.31 ERA, 16 strikeouts and three walks over five starts this season with Triple-A Tacoma. The Ashland, Ore. native was acquired from St. Louis in exchange for infielder Ty Kelly in November of 2014.

The Mariners also transferred righty Evan Marshall to the 60-day disabled list for a strained right hamstring. He was originally placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 6. He made two pitches in the 11th inning on May 5 before being removed from the game.
