RENTON – The Seahawks ruled out defensive end Michael Bennett for Sunday’s game before the team even left for New Orleans.

Bennett played in 81 of the team’s 90 defensive snaps in last Sunday’s game in Arizona, but had not practiced this week because of a knee injury.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said Bennett’s knee will be examined Monday and that surgery is a possibility.

Whether it’s the same injury that Bennett suffered when he was blocked low in Seattle’s Week 6 game against Atlanta is unclear. While Bennett left that game with a sprained knee, he practiced last week and played on Sunday. He has not missed a game since joining the Seahawks as a free agent in 2013.

He is one of seven players already ruled out for the Seahawks, a list that includes Kam Chancellor, who will miss a third straight game with a groin injury.

The Seahawks upgraded left tackle Bradley Sowell to questionable after originally ruling him out. Sowell, who suffered a sprained knee in Arizona, made a quick recovery and was insisting he could be ready to play on Wednesday.

Others who will be out for Seattle: CB DeAndre Elliott, LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (ankle), RB Thomas Rawls (leg), TE Luke Willson (knee).

Bennett is coming off his first Pro Bowl season, and he is one of the leaders on the defense. The expectation is that Frank Clark, a second-year defensive lineman, will take his spot in the starting lineup, but the Seahawks may need to make a roster move to add depth along the defensive line.
