After making big strides defensively in second season as a big leaguer, Seattle Mariners second baseman Cole Young has won his first Gold Glove award.

Mariners reportedly hire new hitting coach as manager search continues

MLB and Rawlings announced Sunday night that Young beat out Kansas City’s Michael Massey and Chicago’s Chase Meidroth for the American League Gold Glove at second base.

Young is the first Mariner to win a Gold Glove since Cal Raleigh won the AL Gold Glove at catcher and AL Platinum Glove award and Dylan Moore won the AL utility player Gold Glove in 2024. He is the first Mariners second baseman to win the award since Bret Boone won three straight from 2002-04.

Young also joined Hall of Famer and Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. as one of just two player in franchise history to win a Gold Glove in his age-22 season or younger. Griffey did it three times from 1990-92.

A first-round pick in 2022, Young is the first player from his draft class to win a Gold Glove, beating out another 2022 draftee in Meidroth to do so.

The 23-year-old Young led AL second baseman in defensive runs saved by a wide margin with 16. Massey’s five were the next closest. Young also led AL players at his position in fielding percentage (.990), games played (157), innings played (1,350 1/3), assists (397), putouts (223) and double plays (69).

Young, however, was not loved by all defensive metrics. His minus-four fielding run value and minus-five outs above average at second base were both last among the AL Gold Glove finalists at his position.

In addition to earning a Gold Glove this season, Young made noticeable strides at the plate while slashing .246/.312/.381 with 17 homers, 19 doubles, four triples, 66 RBIs, 44 walks and 109 strikeouts in 160 games.
