Apple Cup football game will have an even earlier date in 2027

A year after the Dawgs and Cougs opened the 2026 football season against each other, they will do it again in 2027 – only this time, it will happen in August.

If you thought the annual Apple Cup rivalry game between the UW Huskies and WSU Cougars couldn’t get any earlier in the football calendar than it did in 2026, think again.

The date will be Saturday, Aug. 28, with the game taking place at Pullman’s Martin Stadium, the home of the Cougars. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 18, but the two schools have agreed to make the schedule change, WSU announced Monday.

This year’s Apple Cup was on Sept. 6, allowing the game to be showcased on national TV on the final Sunday of the year before the return of NFL football. UW won the game 24-10 at Husky Stadium.

The Apple Cup was traditionally played on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving when the Huskies and Cougars were both in the Pac-12 (or any of the conference’s previous names), but it has switched to an early-season matchup since UW moved to the Big Ten in 2024.

The Huskies have won the last two Apple Cup games over the Cougars, while WSU won in 2024 when the game was played at the neutral location of Seattle’s Lumen Field.

UW is 4-3 overall this season with five games to go in the regular season. WSU is 1-7 with four games left in its first year both under head coach Kirby Moore and back in the new-look Pac-12.
