The Seattle Seahawks sputtered on offense again and their late comeback ultimately fell short in a 17-14 loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night.

Below are Seahawks color analyst and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman’s takeaways from Seattle’s Week 6 loss.

A rough night for the O-line

For the second straight week, quarterback Sam Darnold was sacked five as Seattle’s offense struggled to get anything going before the fourth quarter against a Denver defense that was down two of its top defensive backs. On top of those five sacks, Darnold was under constant pressure.

“I felt like the offensive line kind of took it on the chin a little bit,” Wyman said. “There was a there was a lot of pressures. There was at one point eight guys that had pressures and then a few of those players had multiple pressures… The sacks were bad. It was five sacks. That part was rough.”

Running game still a work in progress

Seattle is still without its top two options at running back and it showed for much of Thursday’s loss. But there were a couple good signs along the way. Velus Jones Jr. had 20 yards on his first four carries of the season, and George Holani provided a rugged 13-yard run in the fourth quarter that set up his 1-yard TD.

Ultimately, Seattle running backs still averaged just under four yards per carry with 92 yards on 23 rushes, good for 3.9 yards a pop.

“I think they’re still trying to figure out the running game,” Wyman said. “Saw some signs of life with the running backs breaking some tackles and getting downfield a little bit, but I just think it’s going to be a matter of time that you’re gonna get your run game going just because you’ve got a rookie who has fumbled and he’s hurt, and you’re waiting for Zach Charbonnet. And then, the other guys are good players, but probably not what’s going to take you to the playoffs as far as right now goes.”

Defense played well enough to win

Seattle’s defense showed moments of weakness in the second quarter when it uncharacteristically gave up a 16-play, 79-yard scoring touchdown march. It also extended the following drive with a facemask penalty that erased a third-down stop and helped the Broncos drive for another TD. But in the second half, the defense allowed just 30 yards on 22 plays, which included making a late stop that set up the offense’s drive for a game-tying field goal in the final moments of regulation.

When “you hold a team to like 168 yards, you should win that game,” Wyman said. “So, the defense, there were times I was a little frustrated by them, but in the end they played really well. So, this is a tough one to lose. They really should have had this one.”
