Seahawks signing 2-time Pro Bowl RB Joe Mixon to practice squad

Seattle is signing Mixon to its practice squad in the wake of Jadarian Price landing on injured reserve.

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to sign former two-time Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon to their practice squad, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported on Monday afternoon.

Shortly after the news broke, head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed that Mixon worked out for the Seahawks earlier in the day and is “going through the process” of signing with the practice squad. That process involves completing his medical exam, Schefter reported.

Mixon’s addition comes two days after the Seahawks placed starting running back Jadarian Price on injured reserve, which means the rookie first-round draft pick is required to miss at least four games. The earliest Price could return is for Seattle’s Week 8 matchup against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 2.

With Price on IR, Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and Velus Jones Jr. are the three running backs on the Seahawks’ 53-man roster. They also have Jacardia Wright on their practice squad, but Macdonald said last week that he’s dealing with some health issues.

Running back Zach Charbonnet returned to practice last Thursday for the first time since February ACL surgery, but he’s still at least another week from returning to game action.

“We’re down runners,” Macdonald said when asked why the Seahawks are signing Mixon. “We need running backs. He’s a good running back.”

Mixon, 30, has topped 1,000 rushing yards in five of his eight pro seasons. However, he hasn’t played a snap since a January 2025 playoff game with the Houston Texans.

An Oklahoma product, Mixon suffered a mysterious foot injury prior to 2025 training camp while away from the team. The Texans remained quiet about Mixon’s injury and never officially declared him out for the season, but he never suited up for a game last year.

Mixon requested his release from Houston a day before he was cut on March 6, according to ESPN.

Mixon spent his first seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, which included a career-high 1,519 yards from scrimmage and 16 total touchdowns during a 2021 Pro Bowl campaign. In his lone season playing for Houston in 2024, Mixon earned Pro Bowl honors after totaling 1,325 scrimmage yards and 12 total TDs in 14 games.

Mixon has rushed for 7,428 yards and 60 TDs in 111 career games. He also has 2,448 receiving yards and 14 TD catches.
