You can scratch the name of Torey Lovullo off the list of potential candidates to be the next Seattle Mariners manager.

Lovullo has agreed to a two-year deal to stay with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to multiple reports. The 61-year-old Lovullo just finished his 10th season as the D-backs manager.

These four Mariners are set to become free agents

Arizona has won at least 80 games in each of the last four seasons but hasn’t been back to the playoffs since it lost in the 2023 World Series to the Texas Rangers.

Lovullo has a 750-768 record as manager of the Diamondbacks. He led them to an 86-76 record in 2026, which was two wins short of the National League’s third and final wild card spot.

As a player, Lovullo was an infielder who played in 10 MLB seasons from 1988 to 1999, including 36 games in 1994 with the Mariners.

Lovullo had come up this week as a potential option for the Mariners this offseason, as his previous contract with the Diamondbacks was only through this year. In a Sept. 18 conversation with Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo, Lovullo said the D-backs “probably” needed to make the playoffs for him to feel confident Arizona would bring him back for 2027.

The Mariners and Dan Wilson announced after their season finale last Sunday that he would not be returning in 2027 for a third full season as Seattle’s manager.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto told reporters on Monday that Seattle will go outside of the organization to hire its next manager, and stated that it would be preferred but not a prerequisite that the person hired has managed in the big leagues before.
