Mariners update status of Andrés Muñoz after closer exits with injury

The Seattle Mariners have a new injury concern with two-time All-Star closer Andrés Muñoz after Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Muñoz exited the game after facing three batters, as the hard-throwing right-hander seemed to be favoring his left knee as he finished throwing the final pitch of a one-out walk to Colorado first baseman TJ Rumfield in the bottom of the ninth inning.

A trainer and manager Dan Wilson came out of the dugout to check on Muñoz, and after a short discussion opted to call for Eduard Bazardo out of the bullpen. Bazardo struck two batters out around a two-out walk to record his first career save.

After the game, Wilson told reporters that Muñoz “felt something in his knee” and that the Mariners will know more after imaging is done Monday.

“I think it’s been an issue here and there, but something that just popped up big time today,” Wilson said of the knee concern with Muñoz.

Muñoz, who allowed a home run to Rockies All-Star Hunter Goodman that accounted for Colorado’s sole run Sunday, has had an uneven 2026 season. He owns a 4.24 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and .216 opponent batting average in 61 appearances (57 1/3 innings), and has converted 28 of 38 save opportunities.

The Mariners are off Monday, then begin their final homestand with the opener of a two-game set against the Houston Astros at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday at T-Mobile Park. Houston (77-79) is a game behind the Texas Rangers (78-78) for first place in the AL West. The M’s are on the brink of elimination from playoff contention at five game back of Texas.
