Further testing revealed that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold’s hip is intact and his injury appears to be more muscular, head coach Mike Macdonald told Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk on Thursday morning.
“That’s good news,” Macdonald said. “Now, how long that is – we don’t know yet. But really good news.”
3 things we learned from Seahawks’ opening win over Patriots
Darnold exited with a hip injury after the first series of Seattle’s season-opening 13-10 win over the New England Patriots on Wednesday night. Backup Drew Lock played the remainder of the game.
Macdonald isn’t sure whether Darnold will be able to play in the Seahawks’ next game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 20.
“I don’t know yet,” Macdonald told Brock and Salk. “In my mind, I’m kind of thinking Drew’s gonna play, but no one’s told me that. That’s just the way I’m thinking, but maybe that’s a hedge.”
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday morning that Darnold is expected to miss the Arizona game, but “should be back sooner, rather than later” and could only miss “a few weeks.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday morning that the Seahawks believe they “dodged a bullet” after receiving the test results for Darnold’s injury.
Darnold was injured on the fifth snap of the game against the Patriots, when he landed on his right knee as former Seahawks edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones brought him to the turf for a third-down sack.
Darnold limped off the field and was evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room for further evaluations. He was initially listed as questionable to return, but was ruled out shortly before halftime.
Lock completed 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, leading the Seahawks to three consecutive second-half scoring drives in their comeback victory.
