Mariners Roster Move: Key reliever back from long IL stint

An important member of the Seattle Mariners bullpen is back, with the team activating right-handed reliever Cooper Criswell from the 60-day injured list.

The move was announced a few hours before Monday’s 3:45 p.m. series opener against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Making room for Criswell on the 26-man active roster, right-handed reliever Nick Davila was placed on the 15-day IL with an SC joint sprain. The Mariners also transferred rookie infielder Colt Emerson, who underwent season-ending wrist surgery last week, to the 60-day IL.

Players on the 60-day IL do not count on the 40-man roster, which all players on the active roster must be on.

The 29-year-old Criswell has been out of action for Seattle since he was placed on the IL on June 9. Prior to his injury, he had a 3.52 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 23 strikeouts to eight walks over 26 appearances (30 2/3 innings) for the Mariners. He has a 2-1 record with one save this year. Criswell made three appearances on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers this month.

Prior to losing Criswell to injury, the Mariners’ bullpen ranked second in MLB with a 3.15 ERA. In the time since Criswell went on the IL, the Mariners have 29th out of the 30 MLB teams with a 5.75 ERA. Seattle also lost reliever Matt Brash at roughly the same time as Criswell. Brash is tracking to return in September but has yet to start a minor league rehab assignment in his bid to come back from a lat strain.

Criswell could make his return for the M’s against his former team, as he pitched in 33 games combined over the 2024 and 2025 seasons with Boston. He is in his sixth MLB season, having also spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels.

Davila, a 27-year-old rookie, was recalled from Triple-A on Sunday and has a 4.94 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 24 appearances for the Mariners this season. He allowed three earned runs on three hits, two walks and a hit batter in one inning of work Sunday at Toronto.

Monday’s game is scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. first pitch, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 2:30 with the pregame show.
