Lineups: Mariners start series at Fenway vs Red Sox

The Seattle Mariners have their lineup set for a test against yet another tough pitcher on the road.

Mariners Roster Move: Key reliever back from long IL stint

Seattle will match up in Monday’s series opener at Fenway Park against Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle, who enters with a 8-6 record, 3.09 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 22 starts. The 23-year-old Tolle is a bit short of enough innings to qualify for MLB leaderboards, but he would rank in the top 15 in baseball in ERA, WHIP and opposing batting average (.218) if he did.

With the left-handed Tolle on the mound, the Mariners have Weston Wilson in the lineup hitting eighth and playing third base.

Seattle’s lineup is otherwise what has been standard for the past week-plus with All-Star left fielder Randy Arozarena leading off, followed by designated hitter Dominic Canzone and center fielder Julio Rodríguez. Arozarena, Canzone and Rodríguez are currently tied for the Mariners team lead with 20 home runs apiece.

Reports: M’s to call up slugging OF Lazaro Montes on Tuesday

Catcher Cal Raleigh is again hitting cleanup after returning to the spot Sunday. Raleigh has five homers in his last six games and is one short of the team lead in homers this season.

The Mariners will have George Kirby on the mound in Boston. He is coming off of one of his best starts of the season, holding the Philadelphia Phillies to one earned run on six hits and a walk over 7 2/3 innings in a 4-1 Seattle victory last Wednesday. He struck out nine while lowering his season ERA to 4.02. In three career starts at Fenway Park, Kirby has allowed eight earned runs over 17 innings for a 4.24 ERA and 1.53 WHIP.

The Mariners enter the series looking to snap a four-game skid, which includes being swept in Toronto over the weekend. Seattle is 64-73 on the season, five games out of both the final American League wild card and the AL West lead. Boston, meanwhile, is five games up for the second of the three AL wild cards with a 74-63 record.

The Red Sox series represents three of five games left on the Mariners’ scheduled against opponents with a record over .500 entering Monday, with the other two set against the AL West-leading Houston Astros (69-68) in the final week of the season. Seattle has 25 games to work itself back into playoff position.

Monday’s game is scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. first pitch, with Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 2:30 with the pregame show.
