Mariners Notes: Lineup vs Phillies, latest on Bryan Woo

Randy Arozarena is at the top of the Seattle Mariners’ lineup once again on Monday as the team opens a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies in what’s expected to be a premier pitcher’s duel.

Should the Seattle Mariners re-sign Randy Arozarena?

Arozarena, who has homered three times in Seattle’s past two games, is batting leadoff for the third straight game since Brendan Donovan was struck in the head while warming up in the batting cages before Saturday’s win over the Cubs. Donovan was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list Sunday (retroactive to Saturday).

Arozarena will be followed in the order by right fielder Dominic Canzone, center fielder Julio Rodíguez, first baseman Josh Naylor, catcher Cal Raleigh, second baseman Cole Young, third baseman Weston Wilson and shortstop Brock Rodden.

One notable absence from Seattle’s lineup is infielder J.P. Crawford (left wrist inflammation). The longest-tenured Mariners player has been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma and was scheduled to be evaluated for potential activation by the Mariners’ training staff Monday.

Seattle is set to square off against Phillies ace and three-time All-Star Zack Wheeler. The right-hander has a 2.92 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 144 batters over 120 1/3 innings and posting a 10-4 record in 21 starts this season.

Wheeler is starting opposite Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert. The 29-year-old Gilbert, who has a 10-7 record, 3.35 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 150 1/3 innings in 25 starts this season, is looking to pick up his third straight win. Seattle is 5-1 in his past six starts.

Latest on Bryan Woo

After having his schedule start on Saturday pushed back, right-hander Bryan Woo is slated to start Wednesday’s series finale against the Phillies, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.

Woo left his most recent outing on Aug. 16 against the Astros after just 75 pitches due to right shoulder soreness.

The Cal Poly product has a 9-8 record with a 4.10 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 137 strikeouts to 29 walks over 138 1/3 innings in 24 starts this year.

Woo is slated to matchup against Phillies left-hander Jesús Lazardo on Wednesday.

Díaz clears waivers

Left-hander Jhonathan Díaz cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

The 29 year old made his season debut on Thursday and allowed one run on two hits while striking out one over 1 1/3 innings. He was designated for assignment on Saturday when Seattle promoted top pitching prospect Kade Anderson to make his first career start.

Díaz has appeared seven games and made one start for the Mariners since 2024, posting a 4.38 ERA and 10 strikeouts to three walks over 12 1/3 innings pitched.
