Seahawks rookie safety Bud Clark expected to miss ‘multiple months’

Seattle Seahawks rookie safety and second-round draft pick Bud Clark is expected to be sidelined “multiple months” after suffering a broken ankle in Sunday night’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans, head coach Mike Macdonald said.

Second-year offensive lineman Mason Richman also went down early in the game with what appears to be “a long-term injury,” Macdonald said.

The injuries to Clark and Richman came after the Seahawks lost wide receiver Jake Bobo to a season-ending knee injury in their joint practice with Tennessee on Friday.

“It’s a heartbreaker, honestly,” Macdonald said. “We’ve had three heartbreakers this week, which is tough.”

Clark was injured on Seattle’s first defensive snap of the game, when he fell to the ground amid a pile of players while defending a run up the middle. He remained on the ground for several minutes while being tended to by trainers, who then placed an air cast on his right leg.

Teammates gathered around to console Clark before he was carted off the field.

Clark, who totaled an FBS-leading 15 interceptions over his final four college seasons at TCU, was in the mix to open the season as Seattle’s third traditional safety behind Julian Love and Ty Okada.

Richman, a 2025 seventh-round draft pick out of Iowa, was injured on Seattle’s opening touchdown drive. He was tended to by trainers before walking off on his own power.

Richman, a versatile backup lineman, has played as Seattle’s second-team left guard this preseason. He also can play tackle and center.

“Two guys that we love, that play our style of ball, that are our type of guys,” Macdonald said of Clark and Richman. “Teammates love them. Great teammates, great guys, great football players. They have great futures.”
