Report: Seahawks host former Lions, Dolphins safety for workout

The Seattle Seahawks hosted former Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins safety Ifeatu Melifonwu for a workout on Monday, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Garafolo reported that “no signing (is) imminent,” but that “he could be in play in Seattle down the line.”

Melifonwu, 27, was a third-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions in 2021. He has made 22 starts over his five-year career, while recording three interceptions, 14 pass breakups, 5.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss in 53 games.

After spending his first four seasons in Detroit, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Melifonwu played last season on a one-year deal with Miami. He made eight starts for the Dolphins and recorded an interception, a pass breakup and a sack in 16 games. He played 54% of Miami’s defensive snaps and also logged 104 special teams snaps.

Melifonwu has some interesting positional versatility. Over his career, he has 537 snaps at free safety, 436 snaps at box safety, 208 snaps as an outside cornerback and 206 snaps as a slot cornerback, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Seahawks already appear to have good safety depth, even after Coby Bryant departed in free agency.

Nick Emmanwori, the 2025 Defensive Rookie of the Year runner-up, is back as a versatile hybrid defender. Julian Love returns as the top traditional safety, while second-round draft pick Bud Clark, Ty Okada and free agent addition Rodney Thomas II figure to be the favorites for the second traditional safety spot.

Safeties AJ Finley, D’Anthony Bell and Maxen Hook are also on Seattle’s offseason roster.
