Third baseman Brendan Donovan and catcher Mitch Garver were scratched from the Seattle Mariners’ lineup about two hours before first pitch of Saturday’s home game against the San Diego Padres.

The team did not announce why either were pulled from the starting lineup.

Donovan has dealt with multiple injuries this season. He missed time in early April with what was called a right groin issue. A hip problem caused him to miss more time in mid-April. And when he went on the 10-day injured list shortly after, it was deemed as a left groin strain.

When Donovan returned off the IL last week, he said the injuries are all connected after having sports hernia surgery during the offseason.

Before Donovan returned from the IL, general manager Justin Hollander said the team would likely have to manage his workload moving forward.

Garver jammed his back trying to make a sliding catch on a pop up behind home plate during Thursday’s win over the Astros in Houston. He did not start in Friday’s series opener against San Diego, but he did come in during the ninth inning as a pinch-hitter.

Leo Rivas is getting the start at third base in place of Donovan and will bat ninth against Padres right-hander Walker Buhler. Jhonny Pereda is filling in for Garver behind the plate and will bat eighth.

With Donovan out, shortstop J.P. Crawford moved up from the six hole to the leadoff spot. Second baseman Cole Young also moved from ninth to sixth in the order.

Right-hander Logan Gilbert is set to take the mound for Seattle.
