PHOENIX (AP) — Former Seattle Mariners reliever Paul Sewald agreed to terms with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a one-year, $1.5 million deal, the team announced Saturday, bringing the right-hander back to the franchise he helped reach the World Series in 2023.
The 35-year-old played for the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers last season, finishing with a 4.58 ERA over 22 appearances.
Sewald appeared in 172 games for the Mariners from 2021-23. The veteran reliever had an 18-8 record with a 2.88 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 52 saves while pitching 171 2/3 innings.
Sewald was traded to Arizona in a 2023 trade deadline deal and helped the D-backs make a surprise run to the Fall Classic before losing to the Texas Rangers in five games. He was terrific in the postseason through the first three rounds, with six saves over eight scoreless innings, but struggled in the World Series, giving up six runs over two innings.
