Instant Reaction: Turnovers doom Seahawks in loss to Rams

Round one went to the Los Angeles Rams.

A strong defensive effort wasn’t enough to overcome a sloppy day on offense as Sam Darnold was intercepted four times and the Seattle Seahawks’ comeback bid fell just short during a 21-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in a clash between NFC West co-leaders on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The loss dropped Seattle to 7-3 and one game behind Los Angeles (8-2) for first place in the division.

Mike Salk – Brock & Salk

The Seahawks were not as good as the Rams on Sunday in Los Angeles. Except when they were. The two teams at the top of the NFC West are going to battle again in a primetime game on Dec. 18. I already can’t wait.

Because despite watching these teams battle for every second of the 60 minutes, there are still lots of questions to be answered. The two that stand out most: What would the Seahawks offense look like if Sam Darnold doesn’t revert back to his early career form and throw four hideous interceptions? And what does Darnold look like on a final drive that doesn’t start from his own 1-yard line thanks to what may have been the best punt I have ever seen in a crucial situation?

Those two parts of the game had a drastic effect on the outcome. That isn’t to say the Rams didn’t deserve the win. They forced Darnold into four mistakes. They executed perfectly in the key special teams situation. They put the Seahawks into a difficult position that ultimately was their undoing.

But while the first half might have told me these two teams weren’t quite evenly matched, the second half told a very different story. The Rams have the edge now heading into the rest of the season, and that December game is now even bigger for the Seahawks. But this story is far from over. We just saw chapter one.

Bob Stelton – Wyman & Bob (2-7 p.m. weekdays)

The fact that this game came down to the final play is a minor miracle. You couldn’t imagine a worse performance from Sam Darnold and the offense. The Seahawks dominated the Rams in just about every offensive stat, which just goes to show how deceptive numbers can be. The number that truly mattered was the four interceptions thrown by Darnold.

Considering how often the defense was put in horrible field position with those turnovers, they had a tremendous day out there. They certainly were not perfect, but considering what they were faced with throughout this game, this was an outstanding effort, and really the only reason the Seahawks had the improbable chance at the end.

Unfortunately, this gives ammunition to the staunch critics and skeptics of Sam Darnold. It’s going to be an interesting week of conversations surrounding this one. But more importantly, we’re going to see what Darnold is made of by how he bounces back after if not the worst, one of the worst games of his career.

Mike Lefko – Wyman & Bob

Can Sam Darnold win a big game? Unfortunately, that is the question and concern that will loom over this team for the rest of the season after a costly four-interception (including a back-breaking three in the second half) performance from Darnold.

The Rams have one of the best defenses in the NFL, but this felt like more like a mental edge they have chiseled into Darnold’s brain after the nine-sack playoff performance last year and his first chance against them this season. Having to settle for four times field goals didn’t help, especially with a chance right before the first half to grab some momentum. But even without finding the end zone, the Seahawks had a chance to win the game until the three interceptions in the second half.

If it’s possible, I came away even more impressed with the Seahawks defense. Fourteen of the points they technically gave up were on short fields after turnovers. They completely bottled up MVP-favorite Matthew Stafford and made one of the best offenses in the NFL look pedestrian. Time and time again when it looked like the Rams would pull away, the defense kept it within reach. Byron Murphy II’s breakout season continues in full force and there is simply no team that has been able to contain Leonard Williams.

The Seahawks also have a Sean McVay problem. They have not been able to beat him when it matters, and they fall to 0-6 all-time against McVay when he has Stafford starting at quarterback.

One loss is fine when it comes to your playoff chances, you can overcome that, but the one thing you might not be able to overcome is losing your star left guard. Grey Zabel, who left the game with an apparent leg injury late in the fourth quarter, has been arguably the most indispensable player on the roster, and you just hope for the best after what looked like a pretty bad injury.
