Instant Reaction: Seahawks turn it around to beat Steelers 31-17

The Seattle Seahawks picked up their first win of the season Sunday, at one point scoring 17 straight points in the second half to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-17.

Bob Stelton – Wyman and Bob (2-7 p.m. weekdays)

This was a tremendous bounce back game, to say the least. While there were certainly mistakes and it wasn’t perfect, this Seattle offense really took a nice step forward this week.

Sam Darnold had some brilliant plays throughout this game, and more importantly he was able to bounce back from his mistakes, throwing two interceptions in this game. Seeing a more even distribution amongst Darnold’s receivers I think should ease a lot of minds out there.

More importantly probably for this team is seeing the running game established the way that it was today with Kenneth Walker III gaining 105 yards and a TD on just 13 carries.

Stacy Rost: Seahawks got out of own way, back to identity

I think we also saw for the second week in a row that this defense is going to be a problem for opponents in a big way this season. They held the Steelers to 267 total yards on the day. They did that in spite of the offense putting them in bad field position with a couple of turnovers.

There are a lot of things to like coming out of this win and certainly reasons to feel decidedly more optimistic about what this team can be this season.

Mike Salk – Brock and Salk

The Seahawks won by 14 points. It probably could have been a whole lot more. Regardless of the final score, they were the better team this weekend in Pittsburgh and they showed it over 60 minutes.

After leaving points on the board in the first half with a missed field goal, a blown fourth-down decision and a pick that set up the Steelers for an early score, they roared to life in the second half.

For all the questions about the offensive weaponry, it was the skill players that made a difference. Kenneth Walker was great. His runs on the first drive of the third quarter and the backbreaking third down score in the fourth quarter changed the game.

Sam Darnold did it with his legs and arm. JSN was a constant presence playing at a superstar level (and badly outplaying DK Metcalf). And Cooper Kupp looked like a different player a week after a questionable debut at home.

There’s still plenty of work to do. The run game had its concerns and the turnovers need to be curbed. But by winning in Week 2 on the road, the Seahawks opened up the rest of their season and gave themselves a shot to accomplish anything they want.

Mike Lefko – Wyman and Bob

Despite a couple of shaky drives, the Seahawks’ offense looked really good, especially when it mattered the most.

It feels like offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak can script opening drives well, with both possessions to start the half ending in touchdowns. The opening drive was particularly nice after two third-down conversions and a well-designed play to spring Tory Horton for his first career TD reception.

It was encouraging to see the way Sam Darnold can bounce back in a game. The two interceptions weren’t ideal, but his touchdown drive to start the third quarter was precise, and the third-down play to evade traffic and find AJ Barner in the fourth led to the game-sealing TD run from Ken Walker.

The special teams gaffe by the Steelers obviously changed the game, but credit the Seahawks defense – without Devon Witherspoon – for keeping the Steelers’ offense in check for the entire second half. An all around feel-good win.
