Mariners MILB Moves: A trade, a signing and a release

The Seattle Mariners have been busy with moves in the minor leagues, in three different ways.

Let’s break them down.

1. A trade

The M’s announced Monday they have sent right-handed relief pitcher Will Klein to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league left-hander Joe Jacques.

The 25-year-old Klein spent a day on the Mariners active roster in mid-April but did not appear in a game. He made his MLB debut last season, pitching in five games with the Kansas City Royals and three with the Oakland Athletics.

The M’s acquired Klein in January after he was designated for assignment by the A’s. He pitched in 22 games (21 1/3 innings) for the Tacoma Rainiers, the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate, with a 7.17 ERA, a 1.969 WHIP, three saves and a hold. The Mariners designated him for assignment on Saturday, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for rookie shortstop Cole Young.

Jacques, 30, has 25 games of MLB experience, with 23 of those appearances coming as a rookie with the Boston Red Sox in 2023. The sidearm southpaw also pitched once for both Boston and Arizona last year.

This year, Jacques owns a 6.04 ERA and 1.61 WHIP with six holds and three saves in 18 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

2. An addition

The Mariners have purchased the contract of 24-year-old infielder Jo Oyama from the Ottawa Titans of the independent Frontier League and signed him to a minor league deal.

A native of Japan who played in college in 2023 and 2024 at Cal Irvine, Oyama hit 12 of 44 (.273) with a .320 on-base percentage, .364 slugging mark and .684 OPS in 12 games with the Titans this year.

Oyama played a season in the Pacific Northwest with the Wenatchee AppleSox of the West Coast League, a wood bat summer collegiate league akin to the Cape Cod League, in 2022.

Per the Titans, Oyama is expected to be assigned to the Mariners’ Arizona Complex League affiliate.

3. A release

Veteran right-handed reliever Trevor Gott was released Monday from the Rainiers, per the MILB.com transactions page.

Gott, 32, is an eight-year MLB veteran who returned to the Mariners on a minor league contract in free agency in February. He missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL suffered in March 2024 while in spring training with the Oakland Athletics.

The Mariners initially signed Gott as a free agent in the winter of 2022 after he had his best season in the big leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers. Gott pitched in 30 games for the Mariners in 2023, then another 34 with the New York Mets after a July 3, 2024 trade.

Gott has pitched in nine games in the minors this year, seven of which were with Triple-A Tacoma. In 6 1/3 innings with the Rainiers, Gott allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts for a 9.95 ERA and 1.737 WHIP.
