Mariners’ 5 straight hits with 2 outs leads way to sweep of Padres

By the time there were two outs in the top of the fourth inning Sunday, the Seattle Mariners had exactly no hits against San Diego Padres starter Michael King.

And then suddenly, they couldn’t stop hitting against him.

Three best things we’re seeing from Mariners after sweep over Padres

Randy Arozarena struck for a solo homer to get the Mariners on the board, and the next four M’s players all hit safely. Along the way, the M’s plated three runs to take a lead they would never relinquish in a 6-1 victory over the Padres.

It was the third and final victory in an impressive sweep on the road for the Mariners, who got back on track after dropping five out of six games on their most recent homestand.

With the three wins in San Diego, the Mariners improved their AL West-leading record to 26-19.

And when we say this was an impressive sweep over the Padres, we mean it. Even with the three losses, San Diego is 27-18 this year, sitting just behind the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in an NL West that is looking like baseball’s best division.

The Mariners found themselves in an almost immediate 1-0 hole as Padres superstar Fernando Tatís Jr. homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning against Seattle starter Bryan Woo.

But Woo settled down from there in a big way – he went seven innings, allowing just the one run on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts – to keep the door open for the offense. And the offense eventually kicked it down.

First, Arozarena jumped on a 1-1 sweeper from King, drilling a 107 mph line drive for a 389-foot homer to the left-field seats to break up a nascent no-hit bid and tie the game. It was Arozarena’s sixth homer of the season.

Rowdy Tellez nearly went back-to-back with Arozarena, but had to settle for a double as his opposite-field drive hit the wall in left. Mitch Garver then reached on an infield single to put runners on the corner, and Leody Taveras cashed in with a ground-rule double to right. Miles Mastrobuoni tacked on the third run with an RBI as he beat out an infield single to second base.

The Mariners’ 10-game road trip hits its middle series at 4:40 p.m. Monday in Chicago against the White Sox. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the pregame show.
