Mariners’ Andrés Muñoz named AL Reliever of the Month for April

The awards just keep coming for the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners.

The latest is American League Reliever of the Month, which goes to closer Andrés Muñoz for his superb start to the 2025 season.

Muñoz’s award comes after a pair of Mariners hitters were the two most recent winners of AL Player of the Week: Dylan Moore and Jorge Polanco.

The 26-year-old Muñoz has 11 saves in 11 opportunities, a spotless 0.00 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP through 15 appearances (15 innings) out of the Seattle bullpen this year.

Muñoz leads the AL with his 11 saves, and is behind only San Diego’s Robert Suarez (12 saves), April’s National League Reliever of the Month, for the MLB lead.

Opposing hitters are just 5 for 47 (.106) against Muñoz. He’s allowed six walks while striking out 19, and in four appearances in extra innings has stranded the inherited runner at second base each time.

Among AL relievers who made 10 appearances or more by the end of April, Muñoz was first in saves and bWAR (1.6), tied for first in ERA, second in fWAR (0.6), fourth in opponent OPS (.314), and fifth in opponent average.

The right-hander Muñoz has added a changeup this year to a repertoire that’s headlined by a fastball that reaches triple digits and a wipeout slider.

This is the second time Muñoz has won an AL Reliever of the Month award, with the first coming in August 2023. The only other pitcher in Mariners history to win AL Reliever of the Month is Edwin Díaz, who won it five times over 2017 and 2018.

Muñoz appeared in 60 games in 2024 and recorded 22 saves with a 2.12 ERA, 0.961 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts to 26 walks over 59 1/3 innings.

A native of Los Mochis, Mexico, Muñoz in his fifth season with the Mariners. He made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres in 2019 at just 20 years old, then was traded to Seattle while recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2020.

The Mariners are in Texas to begin a series at 5:05 p.m. against the Rangers, with radio coverage on Seattle Sports beginning at 4 p.m. with the pregame show.
