Brock Huard: Why QB Drew Lock is back with Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks now have four quarterbacks on their roster with Drew Lock back on the team. What does it mean? Brock Huard makes sense of it all.

Drew Lock is back with the Seattle Seahawks, who already have Sam Darnold in place as their new starting quarterback, Sam Howell as a backup option with starting experience, and even Jaren Hall as a practice squad QB.

So why exactly did the Seahawks sign Lock in free agency?
Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard, a former NFL quarterback and longtime football analyst, shared his view Monday morning on Brock and Salk.
“This is a direct reflection of Sam Howell and the competition they’re going to have,” Huard told co-host Mike Salk. “I think right now, on paper, quite honestly this is the deepest QB room I can remember them having. Maybe not the best QB room but the deepest QB room, going four deep. … Jaren Hall, who started a game for Minnesota, (former) BYU quarterback young in his playing experience. I really like him. Obviously Sam (Howell) was a draft pick, he’s started in this league. Drew Lock, a second-round pick, he’s started in this league.
“You’ve got a bunch of guys in there, and it’s gonna be a a competitive deal. I’d be very surprised, obviously, if all four make this roster, and I think it will be a very competitive environment between Drew and Sam.”
Insight into the draft?
It’s unlikely the Seahawks will have a need for both Lock and Howell in 2025. And with the NFL Draft coming up from April 24-26, that’s where things could interesting particularly with Howell, who was on the trade block last offseason with Seattle eventually making the deal with the Washington Commanders for him.
“Who knows how this draft kind of plays out – does Sam Howell have some possible draft value? If somebody doesn’t get who they want, if four or five teams wanted Sam last year, is all of a sudden it’s going to be zero? Probably not,” Huard said.

But surely with four QBs on the Seahawks roster, they’re not interested in drafting another that could be the potential QB of Seattle’s future, right? Not necessarily – though the signing of Lock might be an indication of what the Hawks think of this year’s draft class of QBs.
“I think the most important question, does this preclude them from drafting a QB? No, I don’t think it does,” Huard said. “The money is not that big for any of (Seattle’s four quarterbacks)… I think this does tell me it’s gotta be the right QB at just the right spot in this draft.
“It’s not like they’ve got two, three, four QBs that they love (in this draft), because I think if that were the case and they were comfortable that that could be in the third or fourth or fifth, I don’t think you make this move. I think this was an insurance policy with a guy, by the way, they really do like as a human, as a person in Drew Lock.”
