Seahawks Fast Facts: Seattle holds off Lions in 48-45 shootout

Oct 2, 2022, 1:33 PM | Updated: 2:22 pm

The Seahawks certainly brought their offense to Detroit. Good thing, because they needed it as much as they have in any game so far this season.

Seahawks 48, Lions 45: Stats

Seattle set a season-high in points scored before halftime, and it was able to keep playing add-on enough to never relinquish the lead despite never completely pulling away from the Lions in a 48-45 shootout win Sunday.

The subtext there is that while the offense had a big day, it was another shaky effort on defense for the Seahawks.

Though rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen had a pick-six early in the third quarter (which you could consider the difference in the final score), Seattle had trouble preventing Detroit from making explosive plays and finding the end zone.

The good news is the Hawks, who had scored no more than 23 points in each of the first three weeks of the season, had just as easy of a time scoring against the Lions’ defense as Detroit did against Seattle’s D.

The Seahawks found early success in the passing game, with DK Metcalf and the tight ends coming up big on throws from quarterback Geno Smith.

Tyler Lockett was his usual steady self, and the second half belonged to running back Rashaad Penny, who rushed for touchdowns of 36 and 41 yards, respectively, late in the third quarter and shortly before the two-minute warning.

Penny also picked up a crucial first down that sealed the win for Seattle inside the final minute.

The win improves the Hawks to 2-2 on the season, while the Lions fall to 1-3.

Here are some more fast facts from Sunday’s game.

What you need to know

The Seahawks’ offense was just a little better than Detroit’s, allowing Seattle to never lose its lead after scoring on the opening drive of the game although the Lions never let the score get out of reach.

Rashaad Penny and DK Metcalf each had their first 100-yard games, a good sign for the offense in the first season without Russell Wilson.

Usual Lions kicker Austin Seibert missed the game due to a groin injury, so Detroit promoted Dominik Eberle from the practice squad, and it showed. The Lions left a couple points on the board with Eberle missing a pair of PATs, which loomed large in what was ultimately a three-point game, preventing Detroit from being able to go for two after its last TD to tie the score or take the lead.

Key stats

Geno Smith had yet another impressive showing at QB for the Seahawks, completing 23 of 30 attempts for 320 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and no sacks taken. He also rushed seven times for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Rashaad Penny rushed 17 times for 151 yards and two scores.

DK Metcalf led the Seahawks with seven receptions for 149 yards, while Tyler Lockett added six catches for 91 yards.

Seattle’s tight ends had a big day in the passing game. Will Dissly had four catches for 39 yards and a touchdown, Colby Parkinson caught two passes for 39 yards, and Noah Fant added a two-yard TD catch.

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks had 11 tackles to lead Seattle. He also recovered a fumble.

Uchenna Nwosu had the lone sack of the game, and Tariq Woolen returned an interception 40 yards for a Seahawks TD.

Seattle did not punt once in the game.

Detroit’s offense was led by wide receiver T.J. Hockenson (eight catches, 179 yards, two TDs), Jamaal Williams (19 carries, 108 yards, two TDs) and Jared Goff (26 of 39 passing, 378 yards, four TDs, one interception).

The Seahawks narrowly outgained the Lions 555 yards to 520. The teams each had 27 first downs, but Seattle was a little better on third down (9 of 12) than Detroit (4 of 10).

Seattle won the turnover battle 2-1, but Detroit was penalized less (eight for 59 yards) than the Hawks (11 for 76 yards).

Seahawks injuries

Wide receiver Dee Eskridge left the game due to injury in the fourth quarter.

Up next for the Seahawks

The Hawks will stay on the road for a 10 a.m. battle in New Orleans with the Saints on Sunday, Oct. 9 in Week 5 play. The Saints fell to 1-3 in Week 4, losing 28-25 to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

Coverage will be carried on Seattle Sports 710 AM and KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM, the flagship stations of the Seahawks Radio Network, beginning at 7 a.m. with the pregame show. For details on how to stream Seahawks games online from Seattle Sports, click here.
