Bump’s Seahawks Breakdown: How Drew Lock can win starting QB job

Jul 26, 2022, 3:47 PM

The main attraction of Seahawks training camp, which starts Wednesday, will undoubtedly be the battle for the starting quarterback job.

Does any chance remain of Seattle adding Jimmy Garoppolo?

The two principle members of that battle are veteran Geno Smith and fourth-year pro Drew Lock, who came to Seattle in the offseason blockbuster trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

It’s pretty clear Smith has the advantage going in due to his experience, both overall (he’s entering his 10th NFL season) and because he served as Seahawks QB for four games while Wilson was out due to injury in 2021. Smith winning the job isn’t widely believed to be the preferred outcome, however, because Lock has a higher ceiling as a 2019 second-round pick who came into the league with high hopes after a strong college career at Missouri.

So what does Lock need to do to win the Seahawks’ starting QB job in training camp? In the latest Seahawks breakdown video from former NFL wide receiver Michael Bumpus, he explains exactly that.

For more from Bumpus, who is also the host of Seahawks radio pregame and postgame broadcasts, make sure to tune into Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, and subscribe to the Seattle Sports YouTube channel here.
