Seahawks Football 101: Defenses can always hang their hat on being physical

Oct 27, 2021, 5:00 PM

It’s possible that the Seahawks’ defense might have turned a corner in Monday’ 13-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints, but it was actually a play from a Saints player that jumped out to Dave Wyman.

What is Russell Wilson thinking as he watches Seahawks struggle?

New Orleans linebacker Demario Davis was the star on the defensive side of the ball in the Saints’ win, and that certainly caught the attention of Wyman, a former NFL linebacker himself. So in this week’s edition of Wyman’s Football 101, he takes a close look at a stop Davis made on a rushing attempt by Seahawks running back Alex Collins.

As Wyman explains, a defense needs something to hang its hat on, and even when a team is struggling, that something can be boiled down to just being physical. That’s what Wyman saw from Davis, as well as in another play he breaks down that he recently came across of Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David from a previous game against the Saints.

That point of a defense having something to hang its hat on was also a big topic of discussion Tuesday afternoon on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Wyman and Bob when they were joined by Super Bowl winner and current FOX Sports football analyst Mark Schlereth. Listen to the interview with Schlereth in the podcast at this link or in the player below.
