The Seahawks have drafted a quarterback for the first time under general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll, selecting Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson in the third round.

At 5-foot-11, Wilson lacks the height of a prototypical NFL quarterback, something that several draft analysts have said is the only thing keeping Wilson from being taken in the first round.

Wilson’s diminutive stature didn’t stop him from leading Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl last season, when he completed 72.8 percent of his passes for 3,175 yards with 33 touchdowns and four interceptions.

The scouting report in Wilson courtesy of STATS LLC reads, in part: “[Wilson’s] athleticism was on display during the combine as Wilson was among the best at his position in the 40-yard dash (4.55 seconds), three-cone drill (6.97) and 20-yard shuttle (4.09). He also had a 34-inch vertical leap and 118-inch broad jump. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 MLB draft and played in the minors as a second baseman in 2011 before choosing football.”

The Seahawks have seven selections remaining.
