With veteran guard Luke Joeckel out for a least a month, Seahawks right guard Oday Aboushi says encouraging consistent communication among the line’s remaining members will be the biggest key for Seattle moving forward.

Aboushi joined The Huddle on 710 ESPN Seattle Wednesday to discuss the importance of continuity. The Seahawks will get their first test without Joeckel on Sunday when they hit the road to face the New York Giants (1-5).

For Oday Aboushi, journey to Seattle is worth it

“Having Luke (Joeckel) in there is tremendous,” Aboushi said. “Being in there, you start to build that camaraderie with each other and that understanding. So having a new guy in there, whoever he’ll be this week, we’ve just got to make sure they communicate it as well and we don’t really miss a beat when it comes to that part of the game.”

That new guy will be either second-year pro Mark Glowinski or rookie Ethan Pocic, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Tuesday. Glowinski has starting experience, while offensive line coach Tom Cable praised Pocic’s versatility earlier this year.

In an effort to improve chemistry in the unit, the line members treat themselves to a group dinner every Thursday night (one that also includes the quarterbacks). They take turns paying, and the player who pays gets to choose the restaurant. Aboushi – who covered the $2,500 bill this time – says that nine times out of ten, they’ll eat everything; but when they can’t, they box up what they have left and give it to the homeless.

Carroll has said he expects to see continued growth on the line, and after a Week 5 win said the group is “fitting together better.” Aboushi agrees, but adds there’s room for improvement.

“I think we’re coming along as an offensive line, but we never rest ourselves on, ‘Ok, we did good in this game’… I think there’s a lot more room to improve and room to grow, and that’s what we look to do every day.”
