Seahawks Football 101: How Mahomes, Kelce beat the Hawks deep
Dec 28, 2022, 3:51 PM
The Seahawks’ game against the Chiefs on Saturday was never going to be easy on Seattle’s defense.
Thing is, the Hawks actually played Kansas City’s offense pretty well, holding the Chiefs to just three touchdowns and a field goal in the 24-10 Seattle loss.

A big reason the Seahawks were expected to have a tough time was the Chiefs’ superstar duo of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, and while they were somewhat held in check – 113 of Mahomes’ 224 passing yards came on Kelce’s six receptions, but no TDs – the biggest play of the game was on one of their connections.
Kelce hauled in a 52-yard pass from Mahomes in the fourth quarter that set up Kansas City’s final touchdown of the game (it’s the second play in the video embedded below), which served as the final nail as the Chiefs took an insurmountable 24-3 lead at the time.

That Kelce catch came on a play call that has been a problem for the Seahawks’ defense for some time, particularly for Seattle’s linebackers. That made the play perfect for former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman to break down in his latest edition of Football 101 for the Seattle Sports YouTube channel, which you can watch at the top of this post.
Wyman, who was in the booth in Kansas City calling the game for the Seahawks Radio Network, goes in depth on why the play worked and what the Hawks needed to do better to stop it.
For more from Dave, catch Wyman and Bob from 2-7 p.m. every weekday on Seattle Sports 710 AM. And don’t miss him on the call with Steve Raible, the voice of the Seahawks, for the game against the Jets at 1:05 p.m. this Sunday (New Year’s Day). Coverage starts at 10 a.m. on Seattle Sports and KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM with the pregame show.
