The Seahawks didn’t look great on Thursday night, but if you’re going to lay an egg, it’s better to do so in the preseason rather than a month later.

The Chicago Bears handed Seattle a 27-11 loss in the Hawks’ lone preseason game at Lumen Field for 2022, and there weren’t a whole lot of highlights for the home team in any of the three phases.

Unfortunately, there was news from the game from Seattle in the form of a potentially impactful injury. More on that as we get to the fast facts from the game.

What you need to know

• Third-year Seahawks left guard Damien Lewis, perhaps Seattle’s best returning offensive lineman, was carted off the field with his leg in an air cast in the first half. The Seahawks said during the game that he suffered an ankle injury, which is a worrisome development for a team with a revamped offensive line. Head coach Pete Carroll followed up in his postgame comments, saying that Lewis has a “lateral ankle sprain” and that they were “very, very fortunate” after an X-ray of the injury was negative for a break.

• With Drew Lock unavailable due to a positive COVID-19 test that was revealed on Tuesday afternoon, Geno Smith started a second straight game this preseason for the Seahawks. While his numbers weren’t great, he played better than they suggest and wasn’t helped out by drops and overall uneven play by Seattle’s offense. He also was banged up from the game, suffering a bruised knee, according to Carroll, who added that Smith could have gone back into the game had Seattle needed him to.

Lock, meanwhile, has been hit hard by COVID-19, Carroll said, which could further complicated Seattle’s QB situation with a final preseason game coming up next Friday.

Bump’s Breakdown: What Lock missing preseason game means for Hawks QB battle

• Star Seahawks wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett both started, playing only Seattle’s opening series. Neither showed up on the stat sheet in what was their first action this preseason.

• Charles Cross, the Seahawks’ top 2022 NFL Draft pick (No. 9 overall), had a rough night in the penalty department. He was flagged five times, including four false starts, three of which were in the first half.

• Rookie pass rusher Boye Mafe, a second-round pick and standout in the Seahawks’ first preseason game, was out of action briefly in the first half with a shoulder. He went to the locker room to have the injury tended to but was back on the field in the second quarter.

• New Seahawks linebacker Iggy Iyiegbuniwe made a big stop on fourth-and-goal from the 1 in the fourth quarter to prevent a touchdown and give the ball back to Seattle. Iyiegbuniwe came to Seattle as a free agent from the Bears this offseason.

Notable Seahawks stats

Smith completed 10 of 18 passes for 112 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked twice for 16 yards lost.

Jacob Eason played the second half at QB for Seattle. The UW Huskies product completed 17 of 35 attempts for 141 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions, and was sacked once for a loss of nine yards.

Travis Homer led Seahawks rushers with 44 yards on five carries. Darwin Thompson added 34 yards on six carries, including Seattle’s lone touchdown.

Running back Deejay Dallas was the leading receiver for either team, hauling in four catches for 52 yards.

Marquise Blair made nine tackles to lead the Seahawks. Rookies Mafe and Coby Bryant added five apiece.

Tanner Muse and Myles Adams each had a sack for the Hawks.

Kicker Jason Myer went 1 for 2 on field goals, making one from 27 yards.

Michael Dickson punted 10 times for 474 yards, with a long of 60.

Up next for the Seahawks

Seattle will wrap up the preseason at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 when they head to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys. Coverage will be carried on Seattle Sports Station 710 AM, KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM and the rest of the Seahawks Radio Network, starting with the pregame show at 3 p.m.
