Bump’s Seahawks Breakdown: Who leads in starting CB battle?

Aug 8, 2022, 11:16 AM | Updated: 11:24 am

The 2022 Seahawks season will have a different flavor on defense.

Seahawks Mock Game Takeaways: QB Lock, rookie CB Woolen stand out

There’s the switch to a 3-4 front from a 4-3, a new defensive coordinator in Clint Hurtt, and multiple new coaches on that side of the ball. It’s also where Seattle has the position with the most wide-open competition other than quarterback.

The Seahawks are heading into their first preseason game Saturday with a battle for both starting outside cornerback spots still ongoing. The CB room is full of talent but not a lot of experience in Seattle, with Sidney Jones, who joined the Hawks before last season, the team’s longest-tenured player at the position.

Which players are looking like the favorites in training camp to win those starting jobs? In the latest Seahawks breakdown video from Seattle Sports’ Michael Bumpus, the former NFL wide receiver and current Seahawks pregame and postgame show host shares his insight.

Does Jones’ experience with the team give him an edge? Is veteran addition Artie Burns establishing himself as one of the best options? Is rookie and 2021 Jim Thorpe Award winner Coby Bryant’s upside too much to ignore? And what about Tre Brown, who had a promising start to his Seahawks career last season but is still trying to get healthy? Bump goes through the full list of CBs in the mix and tells you which direction things appear to be leaning.

For more from Bump, be sure to listen to Bump and Stacy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday on Seattle Sports, and keep an eye out for his weekly videos by subscribing to the Seattle Sports YouTube channel at this link.

The Seahawks will play their first of three preseason games when they head to Pittsburgh for a 4 p.m. Saturday contest. Coverage will be carried on Seattle Sports Station 710 AM and KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM, the flagship stations of the Seahawks Radio Network, beginning at 2 p.m. with Bump and the rest of the team on the pregame show.
