Mariners video: How rebuild sets M’s up to compete again quickly in AL

Jan 29, 2019, 12:20 AM | Updated: 10:57 am

Shannon Drayer and James “Boy Howdy” Osborn are back for another offseason Mariners video podcast, and as is usually the case, they have a trade to talk about.

Dee Gordon has ‘been like a big brother’ to new M’s prospect Shed Long

General manager Jerry Dipoto’s prospect-for-prospect trade from last week – Josh Stowers to the Yankees for Shed Long – is far from the only thing are Mariners experts have to discuss, however. There’s also the huge news of Edgar Martinez finally breaking through to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and later in the podcast Shannon and Howdy return to the whiteboard for another in-depth look at the team.

That in-depth look has to do with the American League’s elite and how the Mariners have mapped out a plan to catch them in the 2020 season or soon thereafter. During last week’s pre-Spring Training media day at T-Mobile Park, Dipoto mentioned how the Mariners determined their best shot to become a major player in the AL would come when the Red Sox, Astros and Indians teams that currently lead the pack start to break up. Shannon collected a ton of numbers to show how that might look in a year or two.
