The Seahawks top-ranked rushing offense will be without rookie running back Rashaad Penny this Sunday when they head to Santa Clara to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

O’Neil: Seahawks have chance to revive December tradition

“(Penny) came out of the game last week with a sore knee and it didn’t respond quickly enough to get back for this week,” Carroll told reporters Friday afternoon. “So we’re going to leave him so he can get treated over the weekend.”

Carroll said there’s no concern right now that Penny’s injury is a long-term issue — Penny has already had an MRI — but the team will know more by next week.

“He’s just going to have some stuff done, he’s going to work over the weekend and see if the rehab is effective,” Carroll said. “He feels pretty good but he just couldn’t get going this week. So the rest over the weekend and the stuff that they’re doing will show us something probably by Tuesday, by the time we get to practice on Wed we’ll have a better feel.”

Penny has built up his presence on offense, particularly since a breakout game against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 that saw him rush for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Thankfully for Seattle, the running back group has seen more depth this year than in seasons’ past. Chris Carson remains the lead back (794 yards, 5 touchdowns), while Mike Davis has shown he’s more than capable of handling the role and is averaging a career-high 4.5 yards per carry. The team also saw the return of J.D. McKissic in Week 13.

Notes:

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin (hip) is listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report, but appears likely to play.

“Doug did really well,” Carroll said. “He practiced and made it through today, he’s fine. He looks like he’s playing.”

Safety Bradley McDougald was also on the injury report with a knee injury. Carroll confirmed the injury is the same issue McDougald has been playing through all season.

“Just wear and tear, he’s just banged up,” Carroll said. “But he’s doing fine.”
