The Seahawks will be without starting linebacker K.J. Wright when they take on the undefeated Los Angeles Rams this Sunday, but they will see the return of running back Chris Carson and defensive end Dion Jordan.

Heaps’ Film Room: Why play-action pass is major key for Seahawks

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll spoke with KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson Friday to offer a few injury updates and preview Seattle’s Week 5 matchup.

“K.J.’s not making it, but otherwise we’ll get a couple guys back,” Carroll said. “Chris Carson will come back, he looks great in practice. Dion Jordan will be back with us too. Unfortunately, (defensive end) Frank (Clark) has been sick. He got a food poisoning thing, so he’s been sick a little bit this week, and we’re trying to get him back and get him ready to play, which we think he can. But other than that we’re practicing fast and hard. We had a great week and we’re really looking forward to it.”

The Seahawks are entering Sunday coming off back-to-back wins, but their latest victory also brought season-ending injuries for safety Earl Thomas and tight end Will Dissly.

“It became a really emotional day with a couple of our key guys getting injured,” Carroll said of the game. “And knowing they were hurt right up front, we knew right off the bat they were serious injuries. That was tough.

“Earl’s thing (was tough) just in general because we’d been working so hard to recreate his opportunity here and we had made such great progress and I was pulling for him so much to turn this thing around and finish his career with us and all that kind of stuff, which we’re still hopeful for. And then the game (gets close) and now we’re in a dog fight, too. When we won in dramatic fashion with (Sebastian Janikowski) making the kick, the team really exploded. It was a big win, it was an emotional win…. in the locker room as well. It was hard to celebrate it in normal fashion.”

Carroll’s full interview with Monson will air at 12:30 p.m. on KIRO Radio. Here are a few highlights:

On TE Will Dissly’s patellar injury: “He’ll get back, he’ll be back on track. We’ve been through this surgery and this injury before with (former Seahawks tight end) Jimmy (Graham), so we know what it is. But it’s just a big loss.”

LB Mychal Kendricks received an indefinite suspension from the league relating to insider trading charges, and he could face up to three years in prison. What a price to pay, considering the length of an NFL career: “I really agree. Now that I’ve gotten to know Mychal and the kind of person he is and how he feels about fitting into the world and all that, it’s tough. This is a tough situation for him. And the indefinite suspension, sometimes that’s harder than anything… that (lack of clarity) doesn’t help us at all, it doesn’t help him kind of get his sights set on what’s going on. I think probably the league is trying to take a look and see what the reaction is to it, trying to figure it out. It is a unique situation to them also. It’s not anywhere near some of the violent issues that have come up, or other people that have been involved with some really long-term suspensions. But still, he broke the law and he has to pay the price, and I understand that I guess. But anyway, it’s just difficult and I feel for him. He made a mistake and people make mistakes and you’ve got to pay the price sometimes, and unfortunately that’s what this has turned out to be.”

On the challenge of facing the Rams: “This is a huge opportunity. It’s a great championship matchup. It’s a team in the division as well as a team that’s on fire right now. We’re going to do everything we can to put together a plan that gives us a chance and we’re going for it, we’re not holding back. We play anybody (at home), we feel like we have a great chance to win and we’re going to go for it in that fashion.”

On Rams quarterback Jared Goff: “He’s off to a great start and the team is fitting together beautifully. They’re healthy (and) they’re keeping their elements of the offense all together. The system is allowing him to find the time to stand back there pretty clean. He’s only been sacked five times in four games. What he has been able to do with that opportunity is be extraordinarily accurate. He has just thrown the ball lights out. Whether it’s play (action) passes or dropback stuff on the move, he’s been able to find guys and deliver the ball in very tight situations. He’s been very impressive in that regard.”

On Rams running back Todd Gurley: “What a player. He’s an exceptional player. Physical, tough, really fast, very creative and such a well-rounded player. He’s a terrific blocker, a great catcher, and has everything you’d want in a a running back.”
