Versatility was a big reason the Seahawks drafted Ethan Pocic out of LSU in the second round.

Primarily a center in college, Pocic could play three different positions along the offensive line.

“We thought he was the most valuable guy in the draft because of his ability to have played so many positions,” offensive line coach Tom Cable said.

Now, we’re going to find out if the Seahawks’ jack of all trades on the line can master one: left guard. With Luke Joeckel out for at least the next four to five weeks following knee surgery, Pocic will be competing with Mark Glowinski, who lost his starting job at right guard two games into this season.

“We will see how that plays out and I wouldn’t be surprised if both guys play this week,” coach Pete Carroll said.

The fact that Pocic is being considered as a potential replacement is a good sign for the rookie, who started at right tackle in the preseason and is also the team’s backup center. On the other hand, the Seahawks’ suspect offensive line has now lost a second starter and there’s still not guarantee that the player Seattle drafted in the second round will get on the field.

Cable likes versatility among his linemen, and he said back in training camp that guard was probably the best long-term fit for Pocic’s skill set. The injury to Joeckel may be an opportunity for the rookie to grow some roots.

“My expectations are actually very, very high for him,” Cable said of Pocic. “I don’t look at him like ‘Oh, he’s a rookie, this or that.’ He’ll have some issues, but the football plays, the brain he is, the way he competes, I expect good things.”
