Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll joined KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson on Seattle’s Morning News on Friday ahead of the team’s season opener against the Green Bay Packers, which will air on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM.
Here are some takeaways from Carroll’s interview:
On the return of wide receiver Tyler Lockett from injury:
“(Tyler) looks great. Sometimes you kind of get washed into the woodwork somehow when guys can’t show it and then when they come back to full speed … boy it’s exciting, and we remember why these guys have been so unique and special over the years. … Tyler looks like if (he) makes it back and feels OK tomorrow, then he’s really raring to go. He’s had great days back to back to back, so I think he’s in good shape to play.”
On the development of the team this offseason:
“I think the depth that we were able to watch develop during this offseason in camp allowed us to put together a really strong roster where we have options. We have guys with flexibility — can play different spots. We have the ability to kind of move guys around and also withstand some issues if they do come our way. We’re seeing a big growth in the offensive line from year one to year two, and we’re really anxious to see how that takes hold in comparison to how it was last year.”
On Michael Bennett’s incident with Las Vegas Police:
“It was a horrible occurrence for Mike. Not to tell a whole bunch of the story, but Mike was in a moment (that) just got chaotic in a crowd, and the crowd all dispersed and took off running. He was part of that, and he didn’t know what was going on; didn’t know if it was a fight or gunfire or what it was, that’s how I understand it, and he just got singled out while they were dispersing and it turned into a really bad incident. And he felt like his life was being threatened and he was scared to death. It was a horrific moment for him and it remains to be a bad memory for him.
“So anyway, Mike eventually just needed to get it out. He needed to process it and get through it, and so that’s what’s happening. So, we’ve been hearing support (from the community). I think the thing that is so obvious is that there are inequalities and it’s the real deal, and not everybody recognizes it in the same (way) because of where they come from, or who they are, or their background. And I just think it’s such time that people realize that inequality is part of what’s going on, and we need to work at understanding all people at their walk in life; see what we can do to change the course of things and see if we can’t bring about change.”
