The Mariners announced Friday that left-handed relief pitcher David Rollins has been claimed off waivers by the World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

Rollins, 26, appeared in 31 games over the past two seasons for the Mariners, posting a 7.60 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 27 strikeouts over 34 1/3 innings pitched. Originally a Rule 5 Draft pick by Seattle from Houston before the 2015 season, he spent the majority of last year with Triple-A Tacoma but made 11 appearances over five stints with Seattle in 2016.

Mariners announce 2017 spring training schedule

The Mariners have 36 players on their 40-man roster following the Rollins move. More moves are expected Friday by Seattle, as it is the deadline day for teams to put players on their 40-man rosters to protect them from being eligible to be taken in the Rule 5 Draft next month.

Players left off 40-man rosters who who were signed when they were 19 or older and have played for four years professionally are eligible in the Rule 5 Draft, as are players who were signed at 18 and have played for five years. A team that takes a player in the Rule 5 Draft must keep that player on its 25-man roster for the entire season, otherwise the player must be offered back to his original team for $25,000. If the original team declines, the player may then be waived.
