Seattle Storm’s Nneka Ogwumike wins player of the week award

The Seattle Storm are proving to be a major player in the WNBA’s Western Conference this season, and one of the key reasons is veteran Nneka Ogwumike.

The league is taking notice, too, as Ogwumike was named Tuesday as the Western Conference Player of the Week, covering Monday, June 16 through Sunday, June 22.

Ogwumike, Diggins lead Storm past short-handed Liberty 89-79

Ogwumike led the Storm to wins in all three of their games last week, averaging 25.7 points, eight rebounds, 2.3 assists and two assists per game. She shot 71.4% on field goals (35 for 49) and 41.7% on 3-pointers (5 for 12), and was perfect on two free throws.

Ogwumike scored 26 points and made three steals in a 98-67 win at Los Angeles last Tuesday, had a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds in a 90-83 win at Las Vegas on Friday, and wrapped up the week with 26 points as the Storm beat the defending champion New York Liberty 86-79 on Sunday.

Along the way, the 34-year-old forward accomplished five milestones:

• Tied Sylvia Fowles for the longest streak of games with at least 25 points while shooting 65% on field goals or better, doing so in each of the three games last week.

• Passed Tina Thompson for fourth on the all-time WNBA list for career field goals made.

• Passed Thompson for ninth on the all-time WNBA list for career rebounds.

• Moved into sixth on the all-time WNBA list for career steals.

• Made her 250th career block, becoming just the fourth WNBA player with at least 600 steals and 250 blocks.

Ogwumike, a nine-time All-Star and the 2016 WNBA MVP, is in her second season with the Storm. The Player of the Week award is the 15th of her career and first with Seattle.

On the year, the 6-foot-2 Ogwumike is averaging 17.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

The Storm (9-5) have won six of their last seven games, and enter Tuesday’s 7 p.m. home game against Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever in third place in the Western Conference. Seattle is 3 1/2 games back of first place Minnesota (12-1), whose only loss this season came against the Storm.
