In need of backcourt depth, Storm sign veteran Mitchell

The Seattle Storm added depth to their backcourt by signing veteran guard Tiffany Mitchell, the team announced Thursday.

Mitchell is joining a Seattle team that has relied heavily on All-Star Skylar Diggins and Erica Wheeler in the backcourt. Third-year pro Zia Cooke and veteran Lexie Brown are the only other guards on the active roster, and Brown has missed four of the team’s past six games. The team is also without 2024 second-round pick Nika Mühl, who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Mitchell, a 10th-year pro, began the season with the Las Vegas Aces before being waived on June 30. The South Carolina product averaged 3.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and and 13.1 minutes over 16 games with the Aces.

Mitchell, 30, was a first-round pick (No. 9 overall) in the 2016 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever. The South Carolina product spent seven years with the Fever before making one-year stops with the Minnesota Lynx and Connecticut Sun. The Storm are Mitchel’s fourth team over the past three seasons.

In 282 career games, Mitchell is averaging 8.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 39% from the field, 27.5% from 3-point range and 87.9% from the free-throw line.

The 5-foot-9 guard have a decorated college career at South Carolina. She was a three-time All-American and one-time SEC Player of the Year. Mitchell’s No. 25 was retired by the Gamecocks in 2023.

The Storm open a three-game home stand Friday at 7 p.m. against the Sun before the WNBA All-Star break, which begins July 17. Seattle, which has won nine of its past 12 games, is third in the Western Conference at 12-8, five games behind the first-place Lynx.
