Forward Folarin Balogun put the Americans ahead just over 10 minutes into the action.

Balogun deflected his shot off of Australia’s Cameron Burgess for the score past Socceroos goalie Patrick Beach.

Balogun, who plays for AS Monaco, also had two goals in a 4-1 U.S. win over Paraguay in the Americans’ World Cup opener last Saturday in Los Angeles.

Alex Freeman made it 2-0 by scoring on a header later in the first half.

The U.S., who are playing without star Christian Pulisic due to injury, can clinch a spot in the knockout round if it wins the Pool D contest Friday against Australia.
