Ticket prices skyrocket for US World Cup match in Seattle

Ticket prices were already through the roof for Friday afternoon’s World Cup match in Seattle between the United States and Australia.

But over the past week, those prices have skyrocketed even more.

As of Wednesday morning, the get-in price for the match was $1,932 including fees, according to TicketData.com. That’s actually a slight downtick from the early hours of Monday morning, when the get-in price peaked at $2,348.

In early June, the get-in price was hovering around $1,000. The price began climbing midway through last week, and then surged over the weekend after the United States routed Paraguay 4-1 in its World Cup opener last Friday night in Inglewood, California. It was tied for the United States’ largest-ever margin of victory in the World Cup – and its largest since 1930.

Australia also won its opening match, beating Turkey 2-0. That means the U.S.-Australia clash could ultimately determine the Group D winner. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-place teams advance to the 32-team knockout phase of the tournament.

Friday’s match kicks off at noon at Lumen Field, which has been renamed Seattle Stadium for the World Cup. It’ll be the second of three group-stage matches for the Americans. They conclude group play against Turkey on June 25 in Inglewood, California.

There’s a chance the United States could return to the Emerald City later in the tournament. If the U.S. finishes atop Group D and wins in the round of 32, it would play a round-of-16 match at Seattle Stadium on July 6.

Seattle Stadium is hosting six World Cup matches: Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Egypt on Monday, U.S.-Australia on Friday, Bosnia-Herzegovina against Qatar on June 24, Egypt-Iran on June 26, a round-of-32 match on July 1 and a round-of-16 match on July 6.
