For 3rd straight year, an OL from Washington state goes in 1st round

Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane, a graduate of Graham-Kapowsin High School in the Tacoma area, was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 14 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

It marks the third straight year that an offensive lineman from Washington state has been drafted in the first round.

Rainer Beach High School alum Josh Conerly Jr., a Seattle native who played offensive tackle at Oregon, was drafted by the Washington Commanders at No. 29 overall in 2025. And Mount Tahoma High School alum Taliese Fuaga, a Tacoma native who played offensive tackle at Oregon State, was selected No. 14 overall by the New Orleans Saints in 2024.

The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Ioane was the fourth offensive lineman off the board on Thursday night – including the first guard. He made 32 starts at left guard during his career at Penn State, where he was a second-team AP All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection this past season.

Ioane was a three-star high school recruit. As a senior at Graham-Kapowsin in 2021, he was the star left tackle for a dominant 15-0 team that steamrolled its way to the Class 4A state title. Ioane and the Eagles capped their perfect season with a victory in the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series over Georgia 7A state champion Collins Hill, which was led by current Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter.
